Starting Subflooring in Sketch Up
I've been working on learning Sketch Up by trying out my subflooring diagram. (It also helped to design a new bed frame based on this king size design but that's another story once I get my car back and have room for lumber and an afternoon to build!) I had to make a ton of changes to my subfloor and feel like I'm on version 15 since first starting the diagram from scratch but I'm learning a lot by just by doing things over and over and figuring out the road blocks along the way.
It's tremendously helpful to work in 3D and actually see the trailer. I made a couple of big mistakes that would have taken me awhile to realize if it weren't for moving things around in Sketch Up.
A few early mistakes:
- Making a large back storage porch that would have smashed into the truck on any turn.
- Forgetting that sheathing needs to be nailed/screwed down right on joists on the edges so no getting creative with how far apart they're spaced.
Here are some early sketches of flooring diagrams and the current version I'm working with in Sketch Up:
Figuring out the basic dimensions of the floor. Decided to do it in 3 separate parts.
Subflooring diagram to scale. Lots needs to change!
The 2 ft space on the left would be cut out for a small porch. Will look more into how I should or shouldn't frame that and will eventually cut out the piece on the trailer but that will depend a lot on the trailer I end up buying. ( Sketch Up trailer file via TinyHouseDesign.com )
